Winter Shirakawagou #1
|
This is one of the Gasshouzukuri houses in the Shirakawagou Town in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. "Gasshouzukuri" mean literally "made in the shape of praying hands", because the steepness of the roof looks like two hands pushed together in prayer. This type of roof is necessary, because as you can see here, the snow builds up on the roof and the angle helps it to fall off without having to be shovelled off by hand.
I drove 333 miles, or 537 kilometers across Japan mostly in the snow to get here late on Saturday. It was 16:13 when I took this shot and I had another 19 minutes of shooting before it was too dark to shoot without my tripod, which I didn't have time to use at this point, trying to get as many shots as possible before dark.
