inspiring but I don't get a sense of community from the site.
<br

great thread with my own thoughts. Thanks for starting this Morton!

My approach to deciding Depth-of-Field, is to start with the
assumption that I'll go as shallow as I can get away with to achieve a
dreamy looking image, without loosing too much detail in the main subject.
I decide on the main subject simply by looking for interesting objects or a
color or luminance contrast from the surrounding objects. My "Lone White"
shot is probably a good example ofthis.

<img

I naturally want focus on the white poppy. I shot this at f3.5, with an
f2.8 lens, so I'd stopped down by 2/3 of a stop to get slightly more of the
white poppy in focus than wide open would have given me. I purposefully
chose an angle that would give me lots of nice foreground...
Statistics : Posted by Martin • on 2011-October-08(Sat) 10:21AM • Replies 7 • Views 347

Conversely, if you bow down to the gamut warning and try to "fix" the

applied it to a landscape and changed the WB to "shot as" and then changed
to "tungsten". This action changed the whole image's colors instantly. See
here: http://bit.ly/w0m4k6.
There is a bluish cast in the color of the bark of the tree, and the pink
flowers changed colors too, to be used in a "creative" way. The brush
action of Lightroom should make this process perhaps more selective (to be
used creatively or corrective). In this case I wasn't correcting anything,
I was just trying to be creative with the color using the WB tab in ACR.
Statistics : Posted by Maria • on 2012-January-28(Sat) 4:22AM • Replies 5 • Views 358

the 50mio sound like a lot but considering how much R&D costs these days it
is really not that much. Also it is not easy to make the money back. Apple
seems to make about 20-30% profit on their hot iPads and iPhones but i am
sure other will have much lower profits. Now for how much can you flog off
a Lytro? 200$ 500$ or a 1000$? The photos this thing takes are only 1 or 2
MB, keep in mind you need a sensor that delivers about 10x more MB to have
enough pixels for the magic. So even if you get the rumored 36MB sensor of
the upcoming D800 you produce only 3.6MB photos... worth 1000$? i think not
even 500$. So if they are lucky they can make 100$ per camera, which means
they need to sell half a million of them to make the 50mio back. selling
half a million is a tall order, not many of the current photography
companies do it...
so i agree with Landon, for the time being it is a
gimmick
Statistics : Posted by michaelluthi • on 2012-January-15(Sun) 5:52AM • Replies 9 • Views 568

I'm going to paste it here too. I'll provide more information when I record
the Podcast on this one in a few days.

Here's my back-story:
The lighting here was just the ceiling light in my studio. I placed the
mushrooms as far away from it as possible to get a good angled shadow, but
that's about it. The white balance was adjusted slightly, and I ran it
through Color Efex Pro 4 to give the detail/texture a subtle punch too. <br

Interesting discussion. I'm at a point where I need to do a lot of
upgrades to my computer setup here, and I've never given Aperture a try,
because mostly I'm fearful of my 6 year old iMac not being able to handle
it.
I am still a Lightroom 2.7 user. I've been trying to get my
picture library in order, and am trying to decide on a computer upgrade
before I moved to Lightroom 3. Now I see Lightroom 4 is hitting Beta. <br

Thanks for your reply. I'm trying to learn a few things quickly, as I
will need to use them very soon.

A bit about me - I had a Canon
setup (40D with a couple of nice lenses) and I just traded it in for a
Nikon D7000 with a 35mm 1.4 as my only lens. I'm finding the decision to
be quite good so far and am enjoying the Nikon.

The situation I
need to photograph: We are expecting a baby so baby's first photograph in
the delivery room, mom holding baby, etc.

One question - will my
35mm be sufficient or should I have a longer lens, like a 24-70, or which
one would you recommend? I'm not looking to spend much money on a second
lens as I was wanting to learn with a prime but I suppose I will eventually
need a longer lens so I am wondering if I should get it now.
<br

the industry wants modular cams, because they are interested in selling a
new body every three years, not only a part. Ricoh is the only one I know
who does it. Also it had to be not only the sensor that is exchangable, but
also the processor(s), because these two components will most likely
represent the major improvements in the future. Technically I agree it's
doable and would be great to have, but I doubt they'll offer it.
<br

in new mirrorless cams would let us use our old EF or F lenses, right ? So
we could protect our investement, but it would NOT lead to much smaller

chance to make the lenses smaller, too. This will only be possible when
sensor and lens come closer together, using the space of the antique
