Once the sun cleared the clouds though, around 45 minutes after the sun has risen, it flooded the scene with light, remaining a very bright light source at the top left of the scene. The side-lighting caused long shadows from trees, nice texture in the foliage, and highlighted the volcanic vents in the top right. I used a wide angle lens and a slowish shutter speed to increase the movement in the barley and the direction of the breeze can be seen not only in the sky but in the barley too, as though most of the participants in the image are radiating from the same spot. An excellent payoff for patience and perseverance on this location. Here's a half second exposure to add 'movement' in the barley swaying in the breeze. This is part of the reason I extended the trip by one day to enable me to get back here. I'm glad I did. "Gasshouzukuri" mean literally "made in the shape of praying hands", because the steepness of the roof looks like two hands pushed together in prayer. This type of roof is necessary, because as you can see here, the snow builds up on the roof and the angle helps it to fall off without having to be shovelled off by hand. I drove 333 miles, or 537 kilometers across Japan mostly in the snow to get here late on Saturday. The bright areas are simply breaks in the cloud. The photo was taken from the "number two viewpoint"; one of the few places from which to get a birds eye view of the marsh which covers 17km east to west, and 36km north to south. The biggest marsh in Japan. This is the version with the polarizer turned 90 degrees that I mention in the comments of this photo [Keywords: Japan Marsh viewpoint HokkaidoAug2003-Travelogue landscape portfolio Martin_Bailey_Photography_Screen_Saver MBP_Landscapes_Japan_Screen_Saver] http://www.martinbaileyphotography.com/displayimage.php?pos=-185 Shinei No Oka This is a view around dusk from the Shinei Hill in Biei. This spot is famous for its 360 degree views of the Biei area. I was here hoping for a sunset most evening during my trip to Hokkaido, but it didn't happen this evening either. However, I like this "Big Sky" and the bunch of trees bottom right. This kind of sky always makes me realise just how small we are in the scheme of things. The pale blue dots in the centre at the bottom are plastic covered bales of hey. A famous Japanese photography name Shinzou Maeda made this area famous with numerous photos of this tower and the surrounding area through the seasons. Originally a "Salary Man" in Tokyo, he fell in love with Biei during a holiday, then in his forties he gave up the rat race, moved here and photographed the area until he died a few years ago. He also made short movie snippets, like moving photos in hi-vision commissioned by Sony. I have some DVD's which are really cool. You'd think you were looking at a photo until a butterfly flutters by, or a slight breeze tickles the grass in the foreground. Having worked with his farther before he passed away, apparently his son now continues this life work. If you take a look at the first photo you'll see that there was a thick blanket of heavy clouds behind me. Although effective in themselves, I was pleased to get a shot with some blue sky in it too. Kurodake means "Black Mountain" and SouUnKyou means "Layered Cloud Canyon". There were certainly layers of clouds on the day we visited. The peak poked out of the clouds a couple of times while we were there. I liked this photo the most out of the ones I took as it reminds me of the ink paintings you often see on Japanese scroll paintings (Kakejiku). At the time I spotted them there was a break in the clouds lighting just this hill, this single point, making it stand out, hi-lighted against the dark mountain side behind. Unfortunately as we had past the first flag-man and not yet cleared the road-works, I couldn't stop. Having u-turned and gone back through the road-works twice more trying to find somewhere I might be able to stop, I gave up and parked the car about a kilometre down the road and walked back with my camera. The flag-men were kind, telling me it was OK to walk through, but to be careful and don't get in the way. This resulting photo was not great. The light had by now past over the hill now, so there was not so much contrast between the horses and the mountain in the backdrop. Still I kind of like the general idea of these horses, for some reason, perched on this hill in the middle of nowhere. "Oshin Koshin" in the Ainu language means "Man and Woman". As you can see the falls are largely seperated into two, a thick-set male on the left, and a slender female on the right. This is two shots taken vertically with my EOS 10D and stitched together. I actually took a bunch of photos here with my film camera, an EOS 100. I did this as I try to avoid stitching photos if possible, and with the 17mm lens on the EOS 100, you get the full 17mm. I used Fujichrome Velvia RVP ISO 50 film, which I usually find creates amazing shots. However, this was the first time I'd done this since upgrading my 10D from the D30. I must say, the results with the 10D in RAW mode were much better than the traditional film camera. A sad fact, but I'm of happy that digital SLRs have advanced this far. The surrounding area was mainly sunny with some clouds, but as we approached the lake, the fog set in. There are Japanese songs which speak of the fog around the lake, which I didn't really believe until I saw it with my own eyes. Technically I've cropped the top third of the shot as it was just a grey sky, and de-saturated. The start is close to the Onnenai visitors centre. There are various routes one can take too, so if you don't have a plan, remember where you turned right, left etc. or you might have problems getting back to the information centre and car park. Either side of the walkway is obviously marshland. I don't know if you'd sink far as bears sometimes walk to this point, but there's a thin layer of water all around, so you'd definitely get very wet if you fell over the edge. This was taken shortly before 6:00AM before the mist cleared. Definitely not a great shot, but it's important for my travelogue of the week in Hokkaido, currently under preparation. This was taken from the Hoso-oka Viewpoint, near the Kushiro Shitsugen train station on the eastern side of the marsh. The contrast between the bright part of the sky and the marsh was very harsh. I used a gradual ND filter to lessen the gap, but the ground is still very dark. I quite like the streaks of light the rivers produce as they wind across the marsh though. The photo was taken from the "number two viewpoint"; one of the few places from which to get a birds eye view of the marsh which covers 17km east to west, and 36km north to south. Here is another version with the polarizer turned 90 degrees, with the water like a silver streak as opposed to black. The red pillars are a Torii (Shinto Gate), and that's Mount Fuji in the background. The photo is a bit crowded, but I like the colours. I mounted P121 and P121L gradual grey Neutral Density filters together and lined them up with the line of the trees to enable me to stop the snow on Mount Fuji from blowing out and making the sky a little bluer.
