They were taken at 6:37AM on the ice floe just off the shore of Rausu in Hokkaido. I used my old Canon EOS 100 with Provio ISO 400 reversal film for this one. Basically, when trying to capture the swans taking off and in flight you need a long lens, but to capture moments like these, you need a wider angle. With little time to switch lenses it makes it easier to have two cameras, one fitted with each lens. I must admit though, I'd prefer two 10Ds. I panned with this swan as it gathered speed to take to the wing. You can see from the sharply focused head and neck that I succeeded with the pan. I kind of like the way the wings blurred during the relatively long exposure showing the vertical movement. The patches on the water are ducks, blurred so much that they aren't recognizable. I cropped the top and bottom of the shot making a panarama.
